Firestone Tire and Rubber Company was founded in Akron, Ohio in 1900 to provide pneumatic tires for buggies and carts.

Pneumatic tires also work quite well on those new-fangled horseless carriages which are all the rage. In 1906, Firestone was chosen to provide tires for Henry Ford's Model T.

Firestone opened the Firestone Natural Rubber company in Liberia. With help of the US government, Firestone negotiated a 1 million acre lease on land in Liberia. Leasing that much land to a single entity proved to be a huge mistake for Liberia. The concentration of land under a single owner with sales that fluctuate rapidly led to social tension and civil war.

In 1926, Firestone opened its first Firestone Complete Auto Care center. This project has grown to a network with over 1600 auto care centers nationwide.

The economic downturn in the 1980s brought Firestone to the brink of collapse. Firestone merged with the Japanese owned Bridgestone (æ ªå¼ä¼šç¤¾ãƒ–ãƒªãƒ‚ã‚¹ãƒˆãƒ³). The company was founded in 1930. The English name was derived from a translation of the founder's name (Shojiro Ishibashi) into English. Ishi = "bridge".

The North American headquarters of Bridgestone/Firestone are in Nashville, Tn.
